Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Patan (Sikar) was established to provide quality education to talented children from rural areas.
The National Policy on Education, 1986 envisaged setting up residential schools — Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas — that would bring out the best of rural talent. Under this policy, JNV Patan, Sikar was established in 1987, and the first batch passed out a few years later.
Navodaya Vidyalayas are funded by the Government of India and administered by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education. They offer free, quality education to talented children from Class VI to XII, predominantly from rural areas, irrespective of their family's socio-economic condition.
Admission at Class VI is through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) — a largely non-verbal, objective test designed so that rural children are at no disadvantage. As much as 80% of seats are reserved for candidates from rural areas of the district.
